When children pretend, they’re using their imaginations to move beyond the bounds of reality. A stick can be a magic wand. A sock can be a puppet. A small child can be a superhero.

It is in playing, and only in playing, that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL PLAY

Hello,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog. Your pictures brought back so many memories from my childhood. The hop scotch game was one of my favorites. When my daughter was young, I introduced her and her friends to this game. We played it a few times, but they were not impressed. They said that it was too hot and they wanted to go back in the house. There are so many things or gadgets that are taking the place of "play". Video games, computers, cellphones, and television are all occupying our children's time so that they don't have time to go outside and play. There is also the fact that a lot of parents work in the evening and they don't allow their children to be outside when they are not home, so once again they are stuck in the house.
